Black Pepper: King of Spices

Prized for centuries as a culinary herb, common lack pepper or Piper nigrum, is a key ingredient in Trikatu, an Ayurvedic blend of black pepper, long pepper, and ginger.

Black pepper grows on an evergreen vine native to India’s Malabar Coast. Black and white pepper are from the same plant — black pepper is made from the unripe berries of the pepper plant dried in the sun to make peppercorns. White Pepper is made from dried ripe berries with the outer husk removed.

The use of pepper as a medicine and a spice dates back to in India, and was referred to as “black gold” by traders. The Romans called it “piper,” and some sources say that it was known in Greece as far back as 400 BC. In China and India, black pepper has been used to reduce chills, fever, and inflammation due to rheumatism and sore muscles.

Black Pepper Body and Mind Benefits

Several of black pepper’s health benefits have been confirmed by modern research. The active component of pepper, called “piperine,” contains natural alkaloids that account for the plant’s medicinal use.

Recent studies associate black pepper, and its active ingredient piperine, with antioxidant activity as well immune system support. Some studies suggest that piperine may play a role in stimulating digestive enzymes and supporting healthy pancreas function.

While turmeric has been recognized as having multiple health benefits, its key compounds, called “curcuminoids,” are not easily bio-available. But combined with piperine from black pepper, may be its characteristic of boosting the body’s absorption of the valuable curcuminoids.
